Personally, I will upgrade regardless. They are using an App model pricing scheme where the costs involved are low and therefore so is the barrier to purchase. The other aspect is that given their track record of providing free updates for years I will want to support them. I use Faststone and every couple of years I donate to support the developer. Yes, I expect that I'll upgrade to 2. Serif is certainly worthy of support. Not only is the software both excellent and remarkably inexpensive, and all the upgrades to date free, but it also provides lots of really good free educational videos short, but content-filled.

I simply can't think of another software vendor that provides so much for so little. The last time I was notified of a new version, it was free and I've been running 1. I don't know what I'd be tempted to pay for as far as an upgrade I seem to remember reading a while back that 1. I could be wrong, but it would be the first time this year. That seems to be the case. I used to recommend Intaglio , but it's very expensive and lacking in features compared to newer rivals. Obviously, you can't beat free for price, and Inkscape is pretty great in terms of bezier-editing functionality but I don't think it can match the support for complex compositing effects and speed that the newer vector programs can do.

Consider the following — one is a UI atlas normally transparent; displayed against a gradient background for clarity the other is a texture atlas.

Both are more-or-less entirely vector graphics. Doing this kind of stuff in Inkscape or Illustrator, unless it's improved out of sight since CS5 would be murder, but it's a snap in Sketch 3 and iDraw and probably Affinity Designer. Manta Atlas.
